Designations are initiated by the owner and heritage planning typically presents designation reports twice a year. Designation is supported by previous council direction, namely the Calgary Heritage Strategy, the Municipal Development Plan 2020, and the Culture Plan for Calgary. Next slide, please. The report before you seeks council's approval to designate by municipal bylaw the following evaluated heritage site as a municipal historic resource. That the infrastructure and planning committee recommend that council give three readings to the following proposed bylaw to designate as a municipal historic resource the burn block per attachment two. Next slide, please. Legal protection is enabled by the Alberta Historical Resources Act. It is initiated by the property owner of an identified historic site and facilitated through designation. Currently, Calgary has 174 municipally designated sites. The total would be 175 with council support. Next slide, please. The private property recommended for designation is known as the Burn Block, located in Inglewood. The 1912 Burn Block is an exceptional example of Edwardian commercial architecture style. It is highly valued for its polychrome brick masonry facade and its elaborate and detailed architectural elements. The Burn Block is one of the largest and most prominent buildings along 9th Avenue Southeast and is recognized as a heritage landmark and symbol of the area, making this an important designation citywise. Next slide, please. For the benefit of the new counselors on this committee, I will briefly outline what heritage planning does and why we're here today. Designation is one of the scopes of work of the Heritage Planning Team. We are a team in the City and Regional Planning Business Unit. We work with the community, property owners, and interested parties to identify, protect, and manage Calgary's historic resources. We're guided by the Calgary Heritage Strategy and provide heritage conservation expertise to internal and external stakeholders. Our work plan encompasses a diverse range of work. And we carry out our work with the assistance of our partners, Calgary Parks and Facilities, and Heritage Calgary. And their director, Erica Topola, is with us today and will be speaking towards this designation. Next slide, please. As mentioned before, the burn block is a significant contributor to the 9th Avenue Historic Main Street in Inglewood, and designation would be a milestone in several ways. Despite the irreplaceable heritage value of 9th Avenue, only five of 25 identified sites have current legal protection. Designation of the burn block would help secure the area's unique value as a tourist destination, filming location, and commercial hub. The property owner's request to designate the burn block was partly motivated by access to the Heritage Tax Pilot Program, demonstrating the importance of this incentive in protecting major heritage sites. The property included in this report has been previously recognized by Heritage Calgary through research and adoption as a site on Calgary's inventory of evaluated historic resources. It is eligible for designation as a municipal historic resource, and the owner of this property has formally requested designation. I'm pretty new, so I I I know what you're going through. Uh I'm here today to speak in strong support of report IP 2025 0937, which is the proposed municipal historic designation of the burn block. Heritage Calgary is proud to be a civic partner with the City of Calgary, and our mission is to embrace and keep space for the stories of this place. Each property brought forward for designation tells a unique chapter in Calgary's architectural, cultural, and social history. These designations help preserve the identity of Calgary today, tomorrow, for our two millionth Calgarian, and for generations to come. For a little context, in 1990, council designated Historic City Hall as Calgary's first municipal historic resource. Took 30 years to reach our 100th designation, and in the last five years, we've added 74. Today, hopefully, 75. Awareness and interest from property owners continues to grow, and this year alone, my team has received over 70 requests for evaluations. Of those 70 requests, we have completed 40 evaluations and reevaluations, and 18 new items have been added to the inventory. We might have a few more before the end of the year. This brings the total number of inventory items up to 983 in our city. Heritage is about more than old buildings. It strengthens community identity and pride. It's sustainable through adaptive reuse and provides economic vitality, especially through tourism and historic Main Street revitalization. The burn block is one of the newest commercial heritage designations on Inglewood's historic Main Street. Along the full stretch of 9th Ave Southeast, there's only a few dozen heritage buildings remaining, making every designation essential for the survival of this unique streetscape. This building becomes only the fourth designated commercial property on the Main Street itself. Until now, there's been Fire Station number three, which most people know as the Hosenhound, East Calgary Telephone Exchange. In September, I was here. We designated the Sibley Block, which was really exciting, and then today the Burn Block, which reflects early developments of Calgary's first commercial street. As always, we commend City Administration for their strong collaboration with property owners who voluntarily bring forward their buildings. These voluntary designations speak volumes about Calgary's commitments to honoring our shared past. Heritage Calgary strongly supports additional tools and incentives to help commercial owners maintain and designate their properties.
