For the first time in the war, all four divisions of the Canadian Corps fought together as one cohesive unit. The Canadian contribution to the Battle of Vimy Ridge cannot be overstated. More than 10,000 Canadians were killed or wounded. Their courage helped pave the way for future victories and earned Canada a newfound respect on the world stage. So on April 9th, we paused to remember the sacrifices of those who fought and died at Vimy Ridge. To honor their memory, we must continue to strive for peace, unity, and understanding in our communities and beyond. Not only on April 9th, but every day. Colleagues and members of the public, I hope you'll join me just in a moment of uh remembrance."

It's a self supporting fee. But you pay based on how much you use. There's a lot of people out there that aren't using the service nearly as much as others. So with waste and recycling being really an essential service that we provide, making sure that we have the that the correct funding is in place to be able to ensure that consistent delivery is there is really important. The self-supported model allows us to assess directly on the cost of service to deliver the service. And so what ratepayers are seeing is exactly what it costs to provide the service. And so it provides us with a way to clearly show what those costs are, to clearly allocate them and really precisely identify what we need in terms of the funding to deliver the service. Those the carts as they are then also allows us to distinguish that service that we provide as part of the collection at the single family home. And then we we tie that in with all of the activity that goes on at the waste management facilities to assess the cost of delivering that service, and those fees are allocated to the people who are using that service in that way."

So they now have contracts with people like us with materials recovery facilities like the facility that's just outside of town here to now manage that system and that oversight in a different way. And it the principle behind it is that the producers will then make different choices in their material that they're using in their manufacturing processes. They'll choose materials that maybe there's less packaging, or maybe it's materials that are easier to recycle at the end of the day. So that we see less waste coming out of that."

In Calgary, it is a challenge for them and for that EPR program overall because there is no municipal oversight on multifamily. So the way that they're going about it is that each individual, either property manager or property, is opting into EPR on their own, and they will be paid for their waste fees that they incur right now through their own billing. So each one of those properties has a provider, like a waste management company that picks it up. "text": "So in terms of the efficiency, what we currently do is we have costs that are shared across all three services. And that's really illustrated in the remnant $2 and change fee that we see on the blue cart. These are costs that we basically apportion out a third, a third, a third on our three cart services, but that apply equally to all three. And so if we're not having to do that piece of it, it just saves some efficiency in terms of how we do that work on the back end. And in terms of how we would share that information, it allows us to break it out in a way that shows this is the collections activities, this is the processing, and that would include landfilling and composting, for example. And then these are the program education and other pieces. So we can break those costs out and share them in a way that provides the same or better transparency as we have today in terms of how those cart fees are allocated and really better represents how we operate. You know, an example is we've got a shortage on one type of service on one day. We can shift drivers and other things around to make sure that we can cover that off. And obviously, that doesn't get captured in the way that we do it with three."

It's the overall cost to deliver the program. So that's really the biggest piece of it is that we'll continue to break down as we share information what it costs to deliver. You know, we will still know what the compost facility costs us versus what the landfilling costs are. So as a result, the like the two numbers are like it's guesstimates effectively between uh uh breaking it down now between the three. In in my mind, this is a remnant. Uh the three separate charges is a remnant of uh when we brought on blue cart, or when we brought on black cart, when we brought on blue cart, when we brought on green cart, we kind of did them incrementally, and I can see the the the fingerprints of of of administration trying to be transparent with an old council. I think I would love to be exploring these kinds of things. So please to the waste folks that are tuned in. Um at the same time, I also think I hear the concerns around transparency, but I also think we just need to change our mindset around waste. What is waste? It is all of those services. It is black bin, it is blue bin, it is green bin, and we need to think of them holistically, and we need to stop sort of portioning them out and bidding them against each other. We don't go to the swimming pool and get told how much the chlorine costs and what the lifeguard is and what the pump is and how much electricity was used to make that pump go. We don't break all those pieces out. We provide a service and Calgaryans can use that service and sort of see it in terms of its pricing on the whole.
